Glasgow/Agartala: Tripura’s Asmita Dey scripted history by becoming the first Indian judoka to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, defeating Canada’s Heidi Quach in the women’s 48kg final. The victory marked a landmark moment for Indian judo and brought immense pride to Tripura.
Hailing from South Tripura, Asmita overcame financial hardship and personal loss to reach the top of the podium. Her achievement has been widely celebrated across the state, with political leaders, sports organisations and citizens congratulating her for bringing international recognition to Tripura.
Officials described the victory as a milestone for Indian judo and expressed hope that it would inspire more young athletes from the Northeast to pursue international sporting careers.
