New Delhi: The Government informed Parliament on 29 July 2026 that nearly 7% of India’s installed solar power capacity is unable to operate at full output because of inadequate transmission infrastructure. The disclosure highlights one of the biggest challenges facing India’s clean energy transition.
Minister of State for Power Shripad Yesso Naik said around 12 GW of solar capacity is affected during peak generation hours as transmission lines are unable to carry the full amount of electricity being produced. An additional 21 GW of renewable energy projects are currently operating through temporary grid connections while permanent transmission systems are under construction.
The government said India currently has around 162 GW of installed solar capacity and remains committed to achieving its target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity. Officials stated that new transmission corridors are being developed to remove bottlenecks and improve the efficiency of renewable energy integration into the national grid.
