New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on 15 July 2026 approved a ₹1.28 lakh crore (about $13.3 billion) expansion of the India Semiconductor Mission to accelerate domestic chip manufacturing and strengthen the country’s electronics ecosystem. The decision aims to reduce dependence on imports and position India as a major global semiconductor hub.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the expanded programme will support new semiconductor fabrication plants, chip packaging facilities and the production of critical electronic components. The initiative is expected to attract fresh investments from global technology companies while creating thousands of skilled jobs.
The government has identified semiconductor manufacturing as a strategic sector under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Officials said the additional funding will help strengthen India’s supply chain resilience and enhance the country’s competitiveness in advanced technology manufacturing.
Industry experts welcomed the announcement, stating that the expanded incentive package could accelerate India’s ambition to become a key player in the global semiconductor industry. The move comes amid growing worldwide demand for chips used in automobiles, consumer electronics, artificial intelligence and telecommunications.
