India’s imports of Russian crude oil rose to a record high in June as refiners increased purchases to offset disruptions in global energy supplies following tensions in the Middle East. According to shipping data, Russian oil accounted for the largest share of India’s crude imports during the month.
Industry analysts said Indian refiners turned to discounted Russian crude after supply concerns from the Middle East pushed buyers to diversify their sourcing. The higher imports are expected to help maintain stable fuel supplies and reduce the impact of volatile international oil prices on the domestic market.
India remains one of the world’s largest importers of crude oil, meeting more than 80% of its energy requirements through imports. Energy experts noted that securing reliable and cost-effective supplies has become a key priority amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainties and fluctuating global prices.
Officials stated that India will continue purchasing crude oil based on availability, pricing and national energy security requirements while maintaining strong trade relations with multiple global suppliers. The government is also closely monitoring developments in international energy markets.
