Jakarta: India and Indonesia on 7 July 2026 announced a major defence cooperation initiative during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Jakarta. As part of the agreement, India will supply the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile and the Astra beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile to Indonesia, significantly strengthening defence ties between the two countries.
The agreement was finalised during bilateral talks between Prime Minister Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. Besides defence, both leaders discussed maritime security, critical minerals, digital technology, trade and investment, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
Officials said the missile deal represents one of India’s most significant defence exports and reflects the country’s growing role as a global supplier of advanced military equipment. The partnership is also expected to boost cooperation in defence manufacturing and technology transfer.
The agreement marks another milestone in India’s defence diplomacy under the Act East Policy, while expanding strategic cooperation with Southeast Asian nations. Both countries expressed confidence that the partnership would contribute to regional security and strengthen long-term bilateral relations.
