India and Japan signed a series of strategic agreements on 2 July 2026 to strengthen cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI), clean energy, critical minerals, economic security and defence. The agreements were finalized during talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi during her official visit to India.
The two leaders emphasized expanding collaboration in emerging technologies, resilient supply chains and semiconductor manufacturing. India and Japan also signed their first defence co-development agreement, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to increasing trade and investment while promoting innovation in AI and digital technologies. Japanese investments continue to play a major role in India’s infrastructure and manufacturing sectors, including high-speed rail and industrial development projects.
Officials said the new agreements would deepen the long-standing India–Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, creating new opportunities for businesses, technology companies and defence industries in both countries. The leaders also pledged to continue working closely through regional and global forums to promote peace, stability and sustainable economic growth.
