GS Rao Appointed In-Charge DGP of Tripura After Anurag Dhankar’s Death

Agartala: The Tripura Government on 21 July 2026 appointed G.S. Rao, a senior IPS officer, as the Director General of Police (In-Charge) following the sudden death of DGP Anurag Dhankar. The appointment was made to ensure continuity in the functioning of the state’s police force while investigations into Dhankar’s death continue.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha stated that a high-level committee of senior police officers would investigate the circumstances surrounding Dhankar’s death. Preliminary post-mortem findings indicated death by hanging, but authorities said the probe would examine all aspects before reaching a final conclusion.

The state also bid a final farewell to Anurag Dhankar, with senior government officials, police personnel and public representatives paying tribute to the late DGP. His last rites were scheduled to be held in Baraut, Uttar Pradesh, with full state honours.

Officials said the appointment of G.S. Rao would ensure that policing and law enforcement activities continue without disruption. The government reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a fair and transparent investigation into the death of the former DGP while maintaining public confidence in the police administration.
