Tripura Introduces New Policy to Improve Rural Drinking Water Services

Agartala: The Tripura Government has introduced a new Operation and Maintenance (O&M) Policy aimed at improving the functioning and maintenance of rural drinking-water supply systems across the state.

The policy seeks to establish a more systematic mechanism for maintaining rural water infrastructure and ensuring that drinking-water services remain functional for communities. The move comes as the state continues to expand and strengthen its rural water-supply network.

Under the new approach, greater attention will be given to regular maintenance, quick resolution of technical problems and efficient management of water-supply assets. The objective is to reduce service interruptions and improve reliability for rural households.

The policy is expected to provide clearer responsibilities for the agencies involved in operation and maintenance. Officials believe better coordination can help ensure that infrastructure created under drinking-water programmes continues to provide benefits over the long term.

The initiative is particularly important during the monsoon and other periods when damage to infrastructure can affect water supply in rural areas.
