Agartala: The Tripura Government on 20 July 2026 declared one day of State Mourning following the death of Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, who was found dead under mysterious circumstances in his office chamber at the State Police Headquarters in Agartala. The incident sent shockwaves across the state, and an investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha expressed deep grief over the loss, describing Dhankar as an honest, dedicated and highly respected police officer. The government announced that the National Flag would be flown at half-mast on government buildings across Tripura as a mark of respect.
Senior police officials and forensic teams examined the scene while a detailed inquiry was initiated. The Tripura Police assured that the investigation would be conducted thoroughly and that all aspects of the case would be examined before reaching any conclusion.
Anurag Dhankar, a senior IPS officer, had served in several important positions during his career and was heading the Tripura Police at the time of his death. Leaders from across the political spectrum, government officials and members of the public paid tribute to him, remembering his contribution to maintaining law and order in the state.
