PM Modi Arrives in New Zealand on Historic First Visit by an Indian PM in 40 Years

Auckland: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Auckland, New Zealand, on 10 July 2026 for the final leg of his three-nation tour, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to New Zealand in four decades. He was welcomed by New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, senior government officials and members of the Indian diaspora.

The visit is aimed at strengthening bilateral ties in trade, investment, defence, education and technology. Both leaders are expected to hold high-level talks to advance the recently launched Free Trade Agreement negotiations and explore new avenues of cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

During his stay, Prime Minister Modi is also scheduled to interact with business leaders and address the Indian community in Auckland. Officials from both countries said the visit reflects the growing strategic partnership between India and New Zealand and is expected to result in several new initiatives to boost economic and people-to-people ties.

The Ministry of External Affairs described the visit as a historic milestone in India–New Zealand relations. It is expected to further strengthen cooperation in areas such as maritime security, clean energy, innovation and regional connectivity, reinforcing India’s engagement with the Indo-Pacific under its Act East Policy.
