India’s state-run fuel retailers have said that nationwide testing of E20 petrol has found no evidence supporting claims that the ethanol-blended fuel fails to meet required quality standards. The development comes amid continuing public and political debate over the use of higher ethanol blends in petrol.
The testing was carried out across the country as concerns grew over the impact of E20 fuel on vehicle performance and compatibility. Fuel companies said the samples tested met the prescribed quality requirements.
E20 petrol contains up to 20% ethanol blended with petrol and is part of India’s strategy to reduce dependence on imported crude oil and increase the use of domestically produced ethanol.
The issue has become particularly important for vehicle owners as India expands ethanol blending. Automobile manufacturers have been adapting newer vehicles to operate with higher ethanol blends, while concerns remain among owners of older vehicles.
The latest findings from fuel retailers are expected to add to the ongoing discussion over fuel quality, vehicle compatibility and India’s long-term ethanol policy.
