New Delhi: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned from the Union Cabinet on 25 July 2026, following weeks of nationwide protests over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak. His resignation came after mounting pressure from students, opposition parties and civil society groups demanding accountability for the examination controversy.
In his resignation letter, Pradhan said he was stepping down in the interest of maintaining public order and preventing anti-national elements from taking advantage of the situation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi accepted the resignation, while the Centre assured that comprehensive reforms to the examination system would soon be announced.
The resignation was celebrated by thousands of protesting students gathered at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, who described it as a victory for democratic protest. However, protest leaders maintained that their movement would continue until long-term reforms to the examination system were implemented.
