PM Modi Highlights Tripura’s Chongpreng in Mann Ki Baat

New Delhi/Agartala: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the 136th edition of Mann Ki Baat on 26 July 2026, highlighted Tripura’s traditional musical instrument “Chongpreng” and praised cultural activist Surya Kumar Debbarma for his efforts to revive and preserve the indigenous art form. The Prime Minister urged citizens to support local artisans and preserve India’s rich cultural heritage.

Modi described traditional musical instruments as an integral part of India’s cultural identity and encouraged people to promote indigenous crafts under the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative. His mention of Chongpreng brought national attention to Tripura’s tribal cultural heritage.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha welcomed the Prime Minister’s recognition, stating that it was a proud moment for Tripura’s artists and tribal communities. Cultural organisations across the state also appreciated the national recognition received by the traditional instrument.
